Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 25, 2026
1. Introduction
We're 701 Studios, a small indie iOS developer based in North Dakota. ReelIQ is the privacy-first fishing tracker we make. This Privacy Policy explains what data the app handles, where it goes (or doesn't go), and your rights.
The short version: ReelIQ stores all your fishing data on your iPhone. We don't have a server. We can't see your catches, your spots, or your photos. There's no account to create. No analytics. No third-party tracking. Just your data, on your device.
This policy applies to the ReelIQ iOS app and the ReelIQ website at www.getreeliq.com.

2. Data we collect
Below is every type of data ReelIQ touches and exactly where it lives.
Catch records — on your device only
When you log a catch, ReelIQ stores: species, weight, length, date, GPS coordinates, photo, notes, water-body name, and weather conditions. This data is saved in SwiftData inside the app's secure App Group container on your iPhone. It is never sent to ReelIQ.
If you have iCloud Backup turned on for your iPhone, this data is included in your backup, which is encrypted and managed entirely by Apple. ReelIQ has no access to iCloud Backups.
Profile data — on your device only
The app stores your entered name, home country, and home state/region in iOS UserDefaults on your device. This is used to personalize the app and offer state-based species and water body defaults. It is never sent anywhere.
Weather data — fetched from Apple
When you log a catch, ReelIQ asks Apple's Weather Service (WeatherKit) for current conditions at your GPS coordinates. The query goes to Apple. Apple's privacy policy governs this exchange. The returned weather data is stored on your device with the catch record. ReelIQ does not retain or process weather data beyond what's saved in your catch.
Fish identification photos — on-device only
When you snap a photo to identify a species, the photo is processed on your iPhone using bundled Core ML models. The photo never leaves your device. The identification result is saved with your catch record, also on-device.
AI insights — on-device only
ReelIQ optionally uses Apple Intelligence — Apple's on-device AI — to generate plain-language insight cards from your catch history. All processing happens on your iPhone. There is no cloud component. No data is sent anywhere.
Subscription data — handled by Apple
ReelIQ Pro purchases are handled entirely by Apple's StoreKit. We never see your credit card, payment method, Apple ID, or billing details. ReelIQ checks your subscription status (active or inactive) by reading your local transaction log on the device.
Free-tier catch counter — on your device only
To prevent the free-tier catch limit from resetting if you uninstall and reinstall the app, ReelIQ stores a single integer in your iPhone's Keychain. It's not associated with any identifier and is never sent anywhere.
Website (getreeliq.com)
The ReelIQ marketing website uses Google Analytics for visitor measurement (page views, anonymous browser/device info, general region). This is for the website only. The iOS app does not use Google Analytics or any analytics SDK. See section 4 below for more on Google Analytics, including how to opt out.
3. How we use your data
- Catch records: to display your fishing log, generate insights, score conditions, and power features like the catch map and stats. Used only on your device.
- Profile data: to personalize the app and offer state-based species and water body defaults.
- Weather data: to fill in conditions for each catch and to power forecasts.
- Photos: to identify species and to display in your catch records.
- Subscription status: to unlock Pro features when you have an active subscription.
- Free-tier catch counter: to enforce the 10-catch free tier consistently.
- Website analytics: to understand which pages visitors find useful and improve the site.
4. Apple services we use
ReelIQ relies on several Apple services. Apple's privacy practices apply to each. We don't receive any data back from these services that we hold onto.
- Apple WeatherKit — fetches current weather and forecasts at your location.
- Apple Intelligence — generates on-device AI insight cards.
- StoreKit — handles subscription purchases and renewals.
- App Store — distributes the app and processes purchases.
- iCloud Backup — backs up your device data, including ReelIQ's, when you have it enabled.
For details on how Apple handles data, see Apple's privacy policy: apple.com/legal/privacy.
Google Analytics (website only)
The ReelIQ website (not the app) uses Google Analytics for visitor measurement. This data is collected via cookies and processed by Google. For more on Google's data practices, see:
You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-on.
5. What we don't do
In plain language, ReelIQ does not:
- Use any analytics SDK in the app (no Firebase, no Crashlytics, no Mixpanel, no anything)
- Use any advertising frameworks
- Use any third-party tracking SDKs
- Use cookies or fingerprinting in the app
- Sell, rent, or share your data with anyone
- Operate any remote server that stores your fishing data
- Collect your email address inside the app
- Require you to create an account
6. Device permissions
ReelIQ requests the following iOS permissions, all of them optional:
- Camera: for taking catch photos. Photos stay on-device.
- Location — When In Use: for tagging catches with GPS coordinates and fetching local weather. Coordinates are stored only on-device with the catch record. ReelIQ does not run location in the background.
Photos library access
ReelIQ uses your Photos library in two ways:
- Picking existing photos for catches. The iOS picker lets you choose existing photos to attach to a catch. The picker is sandboxed by Apple — ReelIQ only ever sees the specific photos you select, never your full library.
- "Save Photo to Photos".On a catch detail screen, you can save that catch photo to your Photos library. ReelIQ uses Apple's add-only Photos permission for this — we can write a photo, but we cannot read your existing library.
Either action is entirely optional. Photos are not transmitted to any server.
You can review or change every permission in iOS Settings → ReelIQ. Settings → Permissions inside the app shows each permission in plain English with one-tap fixes if anything is denied.
7. Data retention and deletion
Your fishing data lives on your iPhone for as long as you keep the app installed and the catches saved.
- Delete a single catch: remove it inside the app.
- Delete all catch data: uninstall ReelIQ. Your local storage is erased.
- iCloud Backup: if enabled, your ReelIQ data may exist in encrypted Apple-managed backups. This is governed by Apple's iCloud retention policies. Manage backups in iPhone Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage.
Because ReelIQ has no server, there is no remote copy of your data for us to retain or delete.
8. Children's privacy (COPPA)
ReelIQ is intended for general audiences ages 13 and up. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, please contact us at getreeliq.com/contact and we'll take appropriate action. (Note: since the app is account-free and stores no personal data on our servers, there is no remote data for us to delete.)
9. Your rights (GDPR / CCPA)
Even though ReelIQ doesn't collect personal data centrally, you have rights under privacy laws like the EU's GDPR and California's CCPA. These include:
- Right to access your data — your data is on your iPhone and accessible inside the app.
- Right to deletion — delete catches in-app or uninstall the app to erase everything locally.
- Right to data portability — Pro users can export their catch records to standard file formats.
- Right to withdraw consent — disable Camera, Photos, Location, or Apple Intelligence at any time in iOS Settings → ReelIQ.
- Right to non-discrimination — exercising any privacy right does not affect your access to or use of the app.
Because ReelIQ has no server and stores no personal data centrally, there's nothing for us to delete on our end. Data deletion is performed by you, on your device.
If you want to make a privacy request or have a concern, contact us at getreeliq.com/contact.
10. App Store privacy disclosures
Per Apple's App Store requirements, ReelIQ discloses the following data categories. All categories listed as "on-device" never leave your iPhone:
- Photos: used for catch logging and species identification. On-device only.
- Precise Location: used to record catch coordinates and fetch weather. On-device only. Never used for tracking.
- User Content: catch logs, notes, and fishing data you enter. On-device only.
- Purchases: handled by Apple StoreKit. ReelIQ never sees payment details.
None of the above is used for advertising, tracking, or sold to third parties.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the latest revision. Material changes will be flagged on this page and inside the app. Continued use of ReelIQ after changes means you accept the updated policy.
